MGN Astin reporting in for the Hammer\'s Fist on March 28th, 2010.

After a bit of an absence, I\'ve returned to take the place of MGN Ric Hunter who has been sidelined due to RL. BGN Rebelkiller has moved to an Advisor spot and COL Xantros has stepped up to take Vice Prefect position. We\'ve got some great ideas in SOC, so I hope that you all will stick around to see them out!

- The biggest announcement is a change in the Hammer\'s Fist training system, which was just approved by the XO and TO. This is a temporary trial run for now, but if it seems to work out it will become permanent. Previously, when a member joins the Hammer\'s Fist they are required to complete the Basic Stormtrooper Certification Course to graduate from Orion Detachment and become a full fledged member. Under the new system, rather than having to complete a course, a new Recruit will be required to join the EH message boards and post an introductory message on the HF forum (there will be a sticky thread for this). Once this has been completed and they have spoken to the CT, they will be assigned to a Fire Team Leader. Once assigned, the new member will be locked in the rank of Private until they complete the Basic Stormtrooper Certification course. Once this course is completed, they will be eligible for a promotion to Private First Class (and further promotions beyond that) once time in position requirements are met. Privates who achieve a 100% on the course are automatically promoted to PFC.

During my extensive time in command of various training programs (The Directorate\'s CDGI, the TIE Corps IWATS, and M/PLT Daedalus as TO), I have noticed that one of the biggest things stopping otherwise willing applicants from becoming full fledged members was entrance exams. There was a time that we had enough new recruits to afford this, however today we need every new person that we can get. This type of join process also targets the average FPS and RP gamer, people who may just want to join us to play games and nothing else. We can now allow these members to join and participate with us, but we still bar them from rising up through our ranks until they start engaging in more than just gaming activity. The goal here is to let us grow out of our little exclusive club shell and into a more open group that accepts anyone that wants to have fun and be a part of our community. The introduction message post is intended to do just that--get them to be a part of our community. This is the very first thing I learned when I had my first EH command position back in 1999; communication breeds activity.

I will be rolling this new program into the HF over the next week. The Basic Stormtrooper exam needs a bit of a rewrite, and I\'m waiting on the CI to get the join form updated. Once it is complete, we will hopefully see some results.

- Earlier in the week I sent out a mass email to retirees (with help from SA Rapier) and made a post on the EH message boards announcing open applications for various leadership positions in the HF. I was disappointed with the response I got from active EHers, but so far there as been at least 1 application I received from retirees that was worth looking at. I\'d like everyone to welcome back Staff Sergeant Max, who is taking the FTL position of Team 1/Aurek/1st PsyOps!

- I\'d like to congratulate Sirius Clay on his promotion to Sergeant! He was one of the few members who really stuck it out through the last few difficult months, and is more than deserving of his new rank. Congratulations!

- COL Xantros and COL Aija are hard at work at Operation Mongoose. I hope to have some activities going by the end of the week, so get ready!
